Shortness of Breath

Shortness of Breath, or dyspnea, can occur for many reasons.  Two of the most common and worrisome causes are coronary artery disease and heart failure. Some patients with CAD do not develop chest pain, but develop symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath with activity.  Many patients with heart failure develop swelling or edema, but some do not.  Your doctor may want to order a stress test, echocardiogram, and laboratory work to exclude these common causes of shortness of breath.  Other common causes are lung disease, obesity/deconditioning, valve disease, arrhythmias, anemia, and pulmonary hypertension to name a few.
